Iran Mountain Ranges
Iran is a mountainous country and has two major mountain zones. The most famous Iran mountain ranges are Alborz Mountain Range in north and Zagros Mountain Chain in west. These mountain zones include numerous peak above 4000 meters above sea level whit ideal summits for hiking, trekking tours in summer season and ski touring and snowboarding in winter holidays.

Alborz 
Alborz Mountains Range is in the north of Iran and stretches from west to east near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Alborz mountain range forms a natural barrier between the south part of the Caspian Sea and the central plateau of Iran.

Elborz Chain is more than 1500 km long and 30 to 130 km wide. The average height is about 3000m. It has several peaks over 4000m. The highest summit in Alborz is called Damavand which is 5671 masl high. It is situated in central part of this great mountain range.

Damavand
Damavand is a perfect cone-shape volcano. It is located in the central part of Alborz Mountain chain. Damawand is the highest volcano in Asia, the highest peak in the Middle East and the second highest volcano in the northern hemisphere.

Damavand Summit is snow-capped several months a year. Its a dormant volcano that last erupted about 6000 – 7000 year ago. It is believed that this mountain is an extinct volcano. Each year Damavand is visited by numerous Iranian mountaineers and also by many foreign mountain tourists for hiking, trekking, and ski touring.

Zagros
Zagros Mountain Range extends from north west to south east of Iran. Zagros is 1200 km long (from Marivan to Hormoz) and 160 to 360 km wide. Mount Dena chain is a sub-range of Zagros Mountains. The highest peaks of Dena mountains is called Bijan III (Bigan 3) or Ghash-mastan (Ghach-mastan) which is 4435 meters above sea level. Dena Mountain is about 80 km long and approx. 15 km wide.

Dena
Dena Mountain is the highest part of Zagros Range called is roof of Zagros. Also one of the peaks in this mountain chain is called Mount Dena in Farsi (or Hoze Dall in Luri). Dena chain with 80 kilometers length is the longest mountains of Zagros and mountaineers have named it the Alps of Iran. Dena has about 50 summits higher than 4000 meters.
